Q: Why did you decide to create speech computer software? |
| A: I created and produced my own speech software because, as a practicing speech therapist, I was dissatisfied with the speech software that I purchased for my own use with clients. I wanted to introduce an alternative approach that better utilized the interactive strengths that computer programs can offer. My goals were to make available the most affordable, effective, and motivating speech software for use at home and at school. I have a history of creating speech materials throughout my over 30 year’s career of being a speech and language pathologist. I started making speech and language games from tablecloths, other household materials and product components. Other speech pathologists would notice the success this was having in motivating and helping clients achieve their speech and language goals. They often asked to borrow these games and learning tools. Parents, other therapists and teachers were constantly saying to me “You should produce these games and sell them, so others have the opportunity of benefiting from them.” This was always my dream and passion. I made it my mission. I gain great satisfaction knowing that many people are getting assistance for their speech needs from what I have created. I believe you need to make speech therapy fun and interesting so clients will understand what they need to accomplish and then be willing to practice for successful carryover to other settings. | |
| Q: How else is it so personally meaningful for you to create speech software and learning tools? | |
| A: Even after over 30 years of working as a clinical speech pathologist; I am very emotionally moved by those struggling with speech disorders. Difficulty communicating can have a devastating impact on self image, fear of speaking and social functioning. It is deeply discouraging for children and adults (many of whom were not effectively helped when they were younger) to feel inhibited to talk and express their ideas, wants and needs. At school, students may receive negative feedback due to speech difficulties. As a result, they may avoid responding in class and express their frustration through aggressive acting out instead of using their speech. This can lead to being yelled at, punished and isolated. I believe my speech computer software empowers clients by allowing them to learn independently at their own rate. |
